What A Friend We Have In Jesus! Christian devotional

What a friend we have in Jesus.

What a friend we have in Jesus.

What a friend we have in Jesus! Christian devotional.

I often think what an amazing title for an old hymn, “what a friend we have in Jesus”, such amazing and powerful words, do we realise how much Jesus really loves us and what a great friend he is to us, he wants to see us succeed and be released into our full potential.

Here is a video to the song below, you may like to listen quietly as you read.

As you know, we need good strong people around us, to help us prosper, grow and to encourage us, I believe that in the Christian life this is even more important. A Christian needs discipling, I cannot underestimate the benefits and importance of having strong spirit filled Christian friends around us, to help us grow things of God.

Romans 12:2 is a great passage, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I love the fact that when I said yes to Jesus, he put a new born again spirit inside me, which totally changed my thinking and transformed me into something totally new!

I think that we all have good friends who we can share our hearts with and tell them everything, as the song says, “What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer”! I find it utterly amazing that we can share our problems and success stories with Jesus and he will hear a cry for help or our joy, he wants to communicate with us.

Have you ever been discouraged?

I think every single one of us has faced discouragement at some point in there life, but it is amazing thing that however low and discouraged that we may feel, we can take it to the Lord in prayer and he will answer us. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “3 ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and [a]mighty things, which you do not know”. This is such a wonderful thing, answer prayers and shows things we didn’t even know!

Have you ever been let down?

Have you ever been let down by your best friend, maybe you trust them with everything, your life, your money, your words? But then you tell them something in strictest confidence, only to discover that they have shared your secret that someone else, this could be so disappointing. But Jesus is a faithful friend, he will never let you down, you will never disappoint you and he has given you eternal life, how is that for a faithful friend!

Do you have trials and troubles?

I think most of us have suffered from trials and troubles and sometimes we just do not know which way to turn, it can be difficult. But, the good news is, help is available, many times we get deep into our problems, we phone a friend, we look on the Internet for the answer, but actually, the answer is right next to you. If only we would pray, and when I say pray, I mean to pray in faith that Jesus is the answer to our problems. Many times I ask people if they have prayed about a particular issue and often the answer is no, it’s almost as though the problem is too big, but nothing is too big for our God!

Have you had a disagreement?

Have you had a disagreement with your best friend and do you feel very disappointed that they haven’t understood you? Misunderstandings will happen, disappointments will come, but the great thing is that we take it to Jesus and give it to him in prayer, he can break and change the situation.

Let’s be thankful

We worship a supernatural God has the power to turn around any situation, nothing is too big to God! Next time you have a problem or need this prop a breakthrough, take it to the Lord in prayer, because he is your faithful friend! Can I suggest that throughout your working day you take everything to the Lord in prayer, why suffer when we can take everything to the Lord in prayer!

I think sometimes we overcomplicate the Christian life, we need to come to Jesus in a childlike way, with a simple faith an expectant faith that will move mountains. Just remember that you have a great friend, his name is Jesus.

I have put the lyrics to What a friend we have in Jesus below.

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!

In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised
Thou wilt all our burdens bear;
May we ever, Lord, be bringing
All to Thee in earnest prayer.
Soon in glory bright, unclouded,
There will be no need for prayer—
Rapture, praise, and endless worship
Will be our sweet portion there.

Thank you Roy for the beautiful rendition of the much loved hymn ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’, and for your inspirational post.

It is a fact that often it is thought that a problem to too great to take to Jesus. But, that is not so. A few years ago when I had a serious undiagnosed illness, I was visited on several occasions by a Pastor from our Church. It was then that he taught me to pray and ask Jesus to take my problem in His Hands and solve it for me. My greatest problem at that time was getting discharged from the hospital. And, it was a problem. The doctor put in front of me all the reasons she couldn’t discharge me. None of them made sense. I persevered with prayer and the doctor could no longer justify her reasoning. I was, and still am, so grateful to know Jesus.

    1. Hello Valerie,

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on my blog Valerie, I really do appreciate it. It is great to hear that you are a Christian Valerie, this is such a wonderful thing to hear. I really like the words of this hymn, such simple words and yet so true and powerful.

I have been privileged to have seen God do great things and I have seen many miracles and healings, I believe that having a simple and genuine faith in God, changes everything!

It’s great to hear how you were healed, there is so much power in prayer and faith in God, we praise God for your healing and your testimony of his goodness.

I was in Bible school a few years ago and a fellow student had cancer, he knew that God was going to heal him and he told the surgeons that they would find no cancer in his body, even though the scans very clearly showed cancer! The surgeons did not believe him, so they operated, they opened him up and guess what? No cancer, so they sewed him back up again! This man had genuinely heard from God and believed in this miracle!

I love your last paragraph, Valerie.

      Have a great day.
